Web hosting shared server - best uptime - price not an issue

Old Yesterday, 11:38 PM I'm looking for a recommendation for a web host.

I'm hosting my first website. It is for a small business. They are an authorized Ricoh dealership, selling copiers / printers. The website will not receive much traffic. Right now they get about 500 visits / week, and I'm hoping to get that up to 5,000 visits / week. There's no international traffic, and a majority of the traffic will be from local customers in the Eastern PA area.

The site will let you browse a product catalog, download brochures from the host server, view embedded youtube videos, send emails through contact forms, etc. I'm using PHP and HTML5. I have about 250 MB of content so far, and at the most I will have about 2 GB. I don't need email or anything other than web hosting. I don't really want to use VPS or use a command line for anything. A simple shared server where I can easily upload files through a web interface is perfect.

My top priority is uptime. I'm looking for 99.9% uptime, especially during peak hours of 8am - 5pm EST. Price is not an issue. I'm looking for a high quality shared server. I'm looking for an FTP file manager that doesn't constantly crap out on me (re: my experience with GoDaddy) I'm only using one domain name. There seems to be many options, and my google search results for top web hosting seems to only return advertisements.

Thanks!

Old Today, 12:14 AM Searching top web hosting will often give you only advertisments, unfortunately.
Your server requirements are not so big - make sure you check the offers forum over here at WHT, search for reviews here, and good luck in your search!

Reply With Quote Old Today, 12:53 AM Go to http://www.fluidhosting.com/ ... I've been on a shared server there for 10 years this month... they are a little bit higher than some, but it is worth it. I don't worry about my websites.

Reply With Quote Old Today, 02:37 AM I can recommend HawkHost for your services based off what I've read. Their uptime has held strong for my website for almost five years now.

Their packages and pricing per are reasonable in the industry and they've most certainly held their own.

Support wise, I cannot really comment on as I have yet to utilize them. Based off other results though I could judge that they'll at least attempt to rectify any problems that might occur.

Give their Sales team a shout.

Honestly speaking, Uptime cannot be guaranteed in anyway. Servers can go down! At any time! What matters, how providers can minimize it. By close monitoring and proper management.

Instead of leaning too much on judging a company uptime (since most will have a respectable uptime) take a look at other parameters like Support.

Reply With Quote Old Today, 07:31 AM You could try HostGator - while I'm not a fan of these big companies, their hosting is rock solid. At least it was last time I used it a few years ago.
A Small Orange is another option, they're very expensive though.
Reply With Quote Old Today, 10:47 AM If price is not an issue you might want to look into a fully managed vps or dedicated server as well.

Internal Server Error

Old Today, 09:34 AM Mine is Hostgator.com shared hosting & since 2-3 months I'm seeing Internal Server Error on loading pages. But on refresh mostly they go off. Those are occurring sometimes only.

I've attached the screenshot of this typical error.

Mine is all Drupal/Mybb/PHPBB/Joomla and I've not updated in the last 3-4 months.

In the error logs in the Cpanel I also see many entries of:

[Tue Apr 09 04:37:40 2013] [error] [client 107.22.14.201] SoftException in Application.cpp:641: Could not execute script "/home/raggupta/public_html/mysite.com/index.php" I've also caught one error entry related to Internal Server Error: I've raised this in Mybb forum but I've not got any response. All I could find is that one reason of getting Internal Server Error is when number of connections exceed ( limit of 25).

Appreciate expert feedback!

Old Today, 10:26 AM Beside checking the owner, permission, have you checked with HG about your website usage? Is it over their CPU, RAM limitations?

Reply With Quote Old Today, 10:57 AM It could be that your resource usage is over what hostgator allows and they are showing 500 instead of a more descriptive error. It cannot really be errors with owner, permissions, etc. This would give you the error all the time - not just sometimes.

Reply With Quote Old Today, 11:06 AM This is quite a high number for a shared account. It's possible that they put more users on the server, or limits were changed when the company was sold recently, or your problem is completely unrelated. Have you asked hostgator to check what the problem is? I know that Godaddy shows 500 for overusage, but I am not sure about HG.

Have you submitted a ticket regarding this issue? If so, can you PM it to me?

Glad to see that someone from HG is here to help. Hope you can get this resolved.
Reply With Quote Old Today, 01:27 PM It looks like excessive resource usage to me. You might take a look at upgrading to a VPS or even a Semi-Dedicated packages.

But contacting HG support for a detailed investigation of the issues would be the best way to go initially.

Do you get any errors when login in to cPanel/WHM?

I think more likely it's a ulimit process count issue. It seems to only be occurring on short intervals 2-3 times throughout the day which leads me to believe it's coinciding with traffic spikes and/or crawlers.

We have some extended logging in place now so we'll know for sure by tomorrow.
