Determining hosting needs

Hello,

I have a managed dedicated server with LiquidWeb (Q9400 @ 2.66GHz, 4GB RAM, 7200RPM disks) but I am thinking if a different solution, like a cloud SSD VPS, would be better.

It is easy to determine my needs in terms of storage and bandwidth, but how can I know how much RAM and CPU I need, and how much benefit I will get from SSD storage?

The reason I am asking is that sometimes I experience slowdowns and most of them seem to be caused by MySQL which hangs for a few minutes with a "Removing duplicates" message shown in the "MySQL Process List" when certain "SELECT DISTINCT..." queries are run. I have the impression that faster drives would solve this problem but I don't know how to test this assumption.
